The fourteenth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-14) will be held from 17 to 21 September 2018 at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) in Rome, Italy. POPRC-14 will follow the fourteenth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee of the Rotterdam Convention.
POPRC-14 will consider a draft risk profile on perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (CAS No: 355-46-4, PFHxS), its salts and PFHxS-related compounds.
The Committee will also work to strengthen its recommendation to the Conference of the Parties on the listing of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds, drawing on a draft assessment of additional information on these chemicals provided by Parties and observers to the Stockholm Convention, and consider the process for evaluation of perflouorooctane sulfonic acid, its salts and Perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOS, its salts and PFOSF) pursuant to paragraphs 5 and 6 of part III of Annex B to the Stockholm Convention. This latter work will include reviewing intersessional work on a report on the assessment of alternatives to these chemicals and considering how to proceed with sulfluramid, a substance which might meet the definition of a PFOA-related substance and is also included in the risk profile in PFOS, its salts and PFOSF.
The agenda for POPRC-14 is slightly lighter than that of the past meeting, when the POPRC considered draft risk management evaluations for both dicofol and PFOA, its salts and PFOA related compounds, as well as a proposal to list PFHxS, its salts and PFHxS-related compounds in Annexes A, B and/or C to the Stockholm Convention.
POPRC-14 will be the last intersessional meeting of the Committee before the next joint COPs of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, which is scheduled to be held from 29 April-10 May 2019.
