Seventeenth meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Plants Committee and
Twenty-third meeting of the CITES Animals Committee

15-23 April 2008 | Geneva, Switzerland

Highlights for Monday, 21 April 2008
The Asia representative Choo-hoo Giam (Singapore) emphasizes that prohibition of reasonable exports would encourage poaching and smuggling and encouraged Israel to withdraw its proposal.
Daily highlights:
15 April - 16 April - 17 April - 18 April - 19 April - 21 April - 22 April - 23 April

The 23rd Meeting of the Animals Committee (AC23) continued with participants discussing: Review of Significant Trade (RST) in specimens of Appendix I species, including species selected for trade review following CoP13 and CoP14, and the selection of Solomon Islands population of Tursiops aduncus for inclusion in RST; and periodic review of animal species included in CITES appendices. In the afternoon, participants addressed the issues, including sturgeons and paddlefish, conservation and management of sharks, transport of live animals and plants, and nomenclatural matters.
The Oceania representative, Rod Hay (New Zealand), suggests the working group on sharks assessing whether the linkages between international trade in shark fins and meat and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing is a matter for the AC or for the SC clearing-house mechanism.
Susan Lieberman, WWF, noted that the listing of a species to be under the RST was not a punitive measure for its range state, but a helpful methodology for gathering information.
After presenting Israel's proposal to include the Solomon Island's population of Tursiops aduncus (Bottlenose dolphins) in the RST, Simon Nemtzov (Israel) takes a moment to look at the most recent MEA Bulletin.
Daily highlights:
15 April - 16 April - 17 April - 18 April - 19 April - 21 April - 22 April - 23 April
