Highlights for Friday, 4 April 2008

On Friday, delegates continued informal consultations throughout the day to finalize the AWGLCA's work programme for 2008, as well as the AWG's conclusions on means to reach emission reduction targets.

Update 5 April 1:00am: The meeting ended with the adoption of the AWGLCA's work programme for 2008. Thanking everyone for their efforts, AWGLCA Chair Machado closed the meeting at 1:00 am.

Update 5 April 0:50am: The AWGLCA's closing plenary convened just after midnight on Friday. Delegates agreed to some textual changes in a paragraph on inviting relevant intergovernmental processes, the business and research communities and civil society to take note of the AWGLCA's work programme. They then adopted the conclusions outlining AWGLCA's work programme for 2008.

Update 10:00pm: The AWGLCA plenary is expected to convene shortly. The informal group has finished negotiations on the AWGLCA's work programme for 2008 and agreed on draft conclusions that will be presented to the AWGLCA plenary for approval.

Update 9:00pm: Negotiations on the AWGLCA's work programme for 2008 continue in an informal group. While good progress is reported, outstanding issues remain, most notably on issues to be discussed during a workshop on monitoring, reporting and verification.

Update 7:15pm
: At around 7:00 pm, the informal drafting group under the AWGLCA reconvened to consider a new version of the AWGLCA Chair Machado's draft conclusions. Progress was reported as parties worked through the text.

At around 7:00 pm, the AWG's draft conclusions were also distributed and the AWG's closing plenary convened. Delegates adopted the draft conclusions indicating, among other things, that emission trading, the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation should continue to be available in the post-2012 period, and be supplemental to domestic actions. The AWG's conclusions also identify the need for further discussion on measures relating to land use, land-use change and forestry in the post-2012 period.

Update 7:00pm: The informal drafting group under the AWGLCA reconvened to consider a new version of the AWGLCA Chair Machado's draft conclusions. At the same time, the AWG's draft conclusions were distributed and delegates started gathering for the AWG's closing plenary.

The AWGLCA's closing plenary convened just after midnight on Friday.

The mass media is waiting for the outcomes.

AWG Chair Harald Dovland, Norway, convened the AWG's closing plenary and said he was happy at the progress made in Bangkok.
