Highlights for Wednesday, 17 September 2008

MOP-4 Chair Tovondriaka Rakotobe (Madagascar) led the morning plenary session, which addressed: the development of new projects; draft International Implementation Priorities 2009-2012; proposals for amendments to the Annexes to the Agreement; new draft conservation guidelines; and climate change and migratory waterbirds.

Plenary also discussed the latest information on avian influenza, as well as the draft International Single Species Action Plans and their revised format.

In the afternoon, the working groups on technical matters and on financial and administrative matters continued discussions on their respective agenda items, chaired by Vice-Chairs Olivier Biber (Switzerland) and Abdoulaye N’Diaye (Senegal), respectively.

Delegates discussed, among other things, the draft International Implementation Priorities 2009-2012 and proposed amendments to the Annexes of the Agreement.

Vice-Chair Olivier Biber, Switzerland, chaired the afternoon session of the working group on technical matters. MOP-4 Chair Tovondriaka Rakotobe, Madagascar, chaired the morning plenary session. In the afternoon, Vice-Chair Abdoulaye N’Diaye, Senegal, chaired the working group session on financial and administrative matters.

Delegates continued discussions into the morning coffee break.

Sergey Dereliev, AEWA Secretariat, presented a series of draft resolutions on Single Species Action Plans.


John H. Mshelbwala, Nigeria, supported the Mauritian proposal to add 20 seabird species to Annex 2 of the Agreement. Øystein Størkersen, Norway, questioned the added value of adding these species, given budgetary limitations. Scott Newman, FAO, presented on the ongoing activities of the CMS-led Scientific Task Force on Avian Influenza and Wild Birds.

Regional groups met early to coordinate their strategies for the day.
