The 3rd Meeting of Signatories (MOS3) to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Conservation of Migratory Sharks (Sharks MOU) will take place from 10-14 December 2018 at the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.
It will attract signatories of the Sharks MOU, non-signatory states, cooperating partners, UN specialized agencies, and other relevant scientific, environmental, cultural, fisheries, or technical bodies concerned with the conservation and management of sharks.
MOS3 will address the programme of work to support the implementation of the Sharks MOU for the next triennium 2019-2021, including a list of high-priority activities and the relevant budget. It will also consider listing new shark species in Annex 1 of the Sharks MOU, including the Dusky Shark (Carcharhinus obscurus), the Common Guitarfish (Rhinobatos rhinobatos), and the White-spotted Wedgefish (Rhynchobatus australiae).
MOS3 will further:
- listen to reports on implementation, including for the 2016-2018 programme of work, and national reports;
- discuss species- and habitat-specific conservation measures;
- promote synergies and cooperation with the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) on the implementation of the Concerted Action for Sharks and Rays, and with regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs); and
- deliberate on capacity-building, awareness-raising, and communication tools.
