LOCAL AUTHORITY
INITIATIVES
- Sustainable Seattle: This initiative is a network of NGOs, businesses and local
governments in the West Coast US city of Seattle. They worked with the public to produce a list of
40 indicators that are used to chart the citys progress towards sustainability, to inform
decisionmakers and the media, and to involve the public. Indicators cover everything from
pollution and resource use through homelessness and health to poverty and public participation.
Annual reports show how each indicator moves towards or away from sustainability. A similar
project has been developed and piloted by 10 local authorities in the UK. Researchers developed a
list of 90 indicators and local people in each area selected appropriate ones from this list
- The Climate Alliance / Klimabuendnis / Alianza del Clima: About 400 municipalities
in Europe have signed the climate alliance. They have adopted the aim to reduce the CO2-level 50
% by the year 2010, end the use of CFC`s and related chemicals and supporting projects in the
areas of the rain- forest.
