Oslo Rountable on Sustainable Production and Consumption
2.3 - Business
At the Sector Level
National and international associations have helped to raise the overall environmental performance
of business through a number of collaborative ventures. These can be supplemented by action to:
- - Develop or upgrade codes of conduct for producers, retailers, financiers
and advertisers to incorporate measurable commitments to reduce
consumption of environmental resources and promote the development of
sustainable goods and services.
- - Develop or upgrade voluntary agreements and partnerships with
government agencies and NGOs to set targets for improvement in the
environmental performance of goods and services. Special focus could be given
to agreements to promote product life extension and develop products that can
be easily repaired, dismantled and re-used.
- - Develop and strengthen collaborative industrial cooperation and mutual
support programmes to promote more sustainable business practices,
particularly among small and medium sized enterprises, and share information
in this field with all stakeholders.
- - Promote collaborative research projects into new management tools,
especially for the internalisation of environmental costs and the use of
contingent valuation techniques for risk management.
- - Publicise success stories and demonstration projects, and develop
training materials, particularly for smaller companies.

DOCUMENT WINDOW - GREENING IN PRACTICE MEANS BETTER LEARNING PROCESSES
- Report publicly on their environmental performance and provide consumers with information on
the environmental impacts of their goods and services. International and national business
associations should support this by developing common reporting guidelines and monitoring their
implementation.
