The seventh Asia Clean Energy Forum 2012, themed “Accelerating low-carbon energy for all,” opened in Manila, the Philippines. In the morning participants convened for the opening plenary, and heard welcoming remarks from Haruhiko Kuroda, President, Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Robert Orr, US Ambassador to the ADB; introductory remarks by Bindu Lohani, ADB; as well as two keynote presentations by Zhengrong Shi, CEO, Suntech Power Holdings, and Daniel Kammen, University of California, Berkeley. During the morning session Ann Quon, ADB, also presented the ADB 2012 “My View Contest” awards, themed Renewable Energy/Energy for All.
In the afternoon, eight breakout sessions were held under the meeting’s theme. During the first set of parallel sessions, participants heard expert presentations related to: the on-the-ground paradigm of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All; the industry dynamics, business models and potential for expanding solar energy in Asia; low-emission development strategies (LEDS) as a driver for clean energy; and accelerating the diffusion of climate technologies in the Asia-Pacific region. In the second set of parallel sessions, participants heard expert presentations on energy for all, focusing specifically on moving out of poverty through the productive use of energy services; the challenges and opportunities for smart grids and grid integration of renewable energy; emerging regional initiatives to support improved implementation of clean energy; and new approaches to project-based lending for energy efficiency projects in Asia.
In the evening, participants attended a reception hosted by the ADB.
