IUFRO XXIII World CongressThe XXIII International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) World Congress, “Forests for the Future, Sustaining Society and the Environment,” co-organized by IUFRO and the Korea Forest Research Institute, opened on Monday, 23 August in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Over 2700 participants from international organizations, governments, academia, the private sector and civil society, heard an opening speech by the President of the Republic of Korea Lee Myung-Bak. Throughout the day, participants heard discussions on forest research issues in an opening ceremony, plenary, three sub-plenaries, 12 IUFRO business sessions, 19 technical sessions, and poster sessions.

Don Koo Lee, IUFRO President, presented on IUFRO’s work advancing global cooperation on forest science and stressed the importance of the Congress given challenges such as climate change, desertification and poverty. He declared the Congress officially open.

Eduardo Rojas-Briales, Assistant Director-General, FAO, discussed forest trends including heightened financial constraints within the sector, growing demands for the economic, ecological and social values of forests, and the central importance of forests in climate mitigation and adaptation.

Jan McAlpine, Director, UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), for Ban Ki-moon, Secretariat General, UN, underscored the integral role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation and said IUFRO plays an essential role in promoting sustainable forest management by fostering collaboration on forest research activities.
