Summary
The High-Level Assembly of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) took place on the margins of the 21st session of the Conference of Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change on Wednesday, 8 December 2015, in Paris, France. More than a hundred participants attended the meeting including ministers and high-level officials of more than 60 countries as well as representatives of intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations.
During the Assembly, governments, international organisations, the private sector and civil society reported on their key achievements and policies to reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) as well as contributions to future work. Some of the key issues which delegates touched upon included: proposed amendments to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer regarding hydrofluorocarbons; addressing SLCPs in Intended Nationally Determined Contributions; and the importance of improved scientific data and assessment.
Delegates also expressed their wide support for the work of the Coalition commending its success in bringing various stakeholders together to cooperate on reducing SLCPs and share knowledge and best practices.
The Assembly formally launched the CCAC 5-Year Strategic Plan and Framework for Demonstrating Impact (HLA/MAY2015/02). The Strategy is geared towards widespread adoption and implementation of policies, regulations and practices to substantially reduce SLCP emissions as well as monitor the results of these actions. Furthermore, the Assembly approved the Paris Communiqué (HLA/DEC2015/03) which highlights the commitment of all partners to work together on reducing emissions of SLCPs. In addition, at this meeting delegates heard a brief update on the science of SLCPs.
