Highlights and images for 23 May 2016

Summary

The Resumed Review Conference on the Agreement for the Implementation of the Provisions of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 relating to the Conservation and Management of Straddling Fish Stocks and Highly Migratory Fish Stocks (UNFSA, or the Agreement) opened today at the UN Headquarters in New York.

In the morning, delegates addressed administrative matters, including appointments to the Bureau, and adopted the agenda and the organization of work. Participants then delivered general statements, highlighting concerns related to the performance of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, flag state responsibilities, climate change impacts, and data gaps.

In the afternoon, participants continued general statements and heard presentations on the report of the twelfth Informal Consultations of States Parties (ICSP) (ICSP12/UNFSA/INF.3) and the status of the Assistance Fund (A/CONF.210/2016/2). Delegates then focused on the review of the implementation of the recommendations adopted at the 2006 and 2010 meetings and proposed means of strengthening the substance and methods of implementation of the provisions of the Agreement.
