Midweek at ITTC-43

The forty-third session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) completed its third day of deliberations in Yokohama, Japan today. Participants convened in morning and afternoon Council sessions to discuss key issues, including: the draft Biennial Work Programme 2008-2009, restrictions on trade in tropical timber species; ITTO Objective 2000; and forest-related developments in the UNFCCC and their potential implications for ITTO.

In the afternoon, participants convened in a Joint Committee session to discuss ex-post evaluations and the promotion of exchange of information on experiences in implementing SFM at the regional level. Participants later convened in concurrent sessions of the Committees on Economic Information and Market Intelligence; the Committee on Forest Industry; the Committee on Reforestation and Forest Management; and the Committee on Finance and Administration. Contact groups were held throughout the day on: Guidelines for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in Tropical Timber Production Forests; Thematic Programmes; the draft Action Plan; and the Biennial Work Programme.

In the evening, participants enjoyed a reception hosted by the Government of Cameroon.

Committee Session CEM/CFI

The Committee on Economic Information and Market Intelligence (CEM), chaired by Chantal Adingra (Côte d'Ivoire), and the Committee on Forest Industry (CFI), chaired by Dani Pitoyo (Indonesia), met on Wednesday afternoon to discuss: the study on international transportation of timber products; the promotion of wood-based bioenergy; and the facilitation of information exchange for investment opportunities.
