Friday, 16 February: Informal Consultations on the MYPOW and Resumed Organizational Session

On the final day of the informal consultations delegates heard  information on preparation of the Secretary General's reports for UNFF1 and the Chair's summary of the discussions of the UNFF MYPOW.  In the resumed organizational session, delegates discussed and selected a location for the Secretariat of the UNFF and venues for the substantive sessions of the UNFF.

Summary by the Chair

UNFF Coordinator Jag Maini and Chair Rahmtalla consult prior to presentation of the Chair's summary.  The summary will be available as an advanced, un-edited text at the end of the first week of April, with the full, translated report available on 18 May, 2001.

Chair Rahmtalla presented his summary of the informal consultations of the past three days.  Following his presentation, delegates responded to the summary.

Delegates from Malaysia review the Chair's summary.

Australia and other countries objected to the use of the word "consensus" in the summary, noting that the informal consultations did not result in a negotiated agreement.  The summary was not adopted.

Resumed Organizational Session

At the opening of the resumed organizational session delegates were unable to reach consensus on location of the UNFF Secretariat, in part due to associated concerns regarding the venues for meetings of the UNFF.  Switzerland asked that delegates have the opportunity to comment on parallel informal consultations on this topic.

After a brief recession for informal consultations, the session reconvened to approve the election of officers and determination of the duration of their terms of office, location of the Secretariat in New York, and location of the UNFF sessions in New York, Geneva and San José.

Delegates from Sweden and the US greet each other following conclusion of the meeting.

Members of the ENB team edit their notes after conclusion of the session.
