ALPHA 2000 – ECOLOGICAL EDUCATION IN EVERYDAY LIFE(UNESCO Publishing 2002) With contributions from 16 researchers from ten countries, this book looks at adult education and discusses how an ecological approach that focuses on cultural traditions and natural environments of communities can be more useful than education in specialized institutions. THE RIGHT TO TELL - THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT (World Bank 2002) Published by the World Bank this volume explores the role of the media as a watchdog of government and the corporate sector, and considers policies that can prevent the media from exercising that role. The book assesses the media's function as transmitters of new ideas and information, and evaluates the damaging effects that an unethical or irresponsible press can cause to a society. Among the contributors are Joseph Stiglitz , Nobel Prize winner and former Bank chief economist, Robert J. Shiller, author of Irrational Exuberance, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Nobel Prize winner and novelist. KNOWLEDGE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – AN INSIGHT INTO THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEMS (UNESCO 2002) With contributions from more than 5,000 scientists, these three volumes present a selection of articles covering every aspect of sustainable development and includes bibliographies, glossaries, an index and a special section called 'Knowledge in Depth' introducing other topics and articles available as part of the online Encyclopedia. The volumes also offer integrated knowledge and worldviews related to the state of Earth's natural, social, institutional, economic and financial resources. Contributions are holistic, informative, forward looking and will appeal to a broad readership. Access to this encyclopedia is by subscription, via the website: http://www.eolss.net/eolss/eolss_insight.asp THE SOUTH AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CONUNDRUM(South Center 2002) The South Center, an intergovernmental organization promoting South-South cooperation, has recently published "The South and Sustainable Development Conundrum: From Stockholm 1972 to Rio 1992 to Johannesburg 2002." One of the aims of the publication is to explain the essence of the developing countries' perspective and to highlight their concerns regarding the manner in which the international sustainable development agenda has been evolving. The recognition of these issues is also necessary to any serious attempt to break the North-South impasse and work out a sound basis for international cooperation on sustainable development in the future. WHO 2002 WORLD HEALTH REPORT(WHO 2002) The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently launched the World Health Report for 2002. The report, subtitled "Reducing risks, promoting healthy life," measures the amount of disease, disability and death in the world today that can be attributed to some of the most important risks to human health, and calculates how much of this present burden can be avoided in the next 20 years. THE CHALLENGE OF SUSTAINABILITY: The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has released a new book, The Challenge of Sustainability. The book identifies key strategies for meeting the challenge of global sustainability, including: the phasing out subsidies that encourage inefficient and excessive use of natural resources; creating business environments and public policies that attract more foreign direct investment; creating conditions that foster socially responsible investments; mobilizing additional financial resources for environmental improvement; removing barriers to imports from developing countries, particularly in the agricultural sector; ensuring that countries implement their commitments to international environmental agreements; and expanding and replicating successful pilot programmes, experimental projects, and innovative policies. CHILDREN IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM: ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ON HEALTH By illustrating the link between the environment and the well-being of children, this new online resource, published jointly by UNEP, UNICEF and WHO, intends to raise awareness and deepen understanding of environmental health issues. The booklet offers an overview of environmental issues affecting the health, development and well-being of children and presents the state of knowledge in this field, conceding that significant gaps exist in the information and data available. For people working at the international, national, local and household levels with children, health and/or environmental issues, this document encourages inter-disciplinary thinking and suggests concrete recommendations for action. The next World Development Report will investigate how countries can accelerate progress toward the Millennium Development Goals by making services - health, education, water and sanitation - work for poor people. Success in reaching the goals depends not only on faster economic growth and increased resources, but on the provision of these services. The report will examine promising new approaches to problems such as corruption, inadequate monitoring, administrative logjams, and weak incentives, which are the main reasons that these services often fail to reach poor people. WORKING TOGETHER TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: THE OECD EXPERIENCE Responding to a request by OECD Ministers to develop an OECD input to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, South Africa from 26 August to 4 September 2002, the report assesses the contribution that OECD countries make to sustainable development both at home and internationally, and brings together the main lessons learned through the organization's extensive work on sustainable development. OECD HANDBOOK OF BIODIVERSITY VALUATION: A GUIDE FOR POLICY MAKERS The OECD has recently published a handbook that describes the types of values usually associated with biodiversity and considers how economic and non-economic values can eventually be reconciled. It also reviews the various methodological approaches often used to quantify these values and applies a series of concrete policy contexts, ranging from land use planning to the determination of legal damages for environmental degradation.
