Highlights for Friday, 21 October 2011

Delegates reconvened for the Expert Segment of the Africa Regional Preparatory meeting for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, being held in conjunction with the Seventh Session of the Committee on Food Security and Sustainable Development (CFSSD-7).

The morning session focused on the African Regional Preparations for UNCSD (Rio+20), with deliberations focusing on the Africa Regional Review Report for Rio+20, the Africa Report on New and Emerging Challenges and Africa Report on Green Economy in the context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Eradication. Delegates highlighted the importance of including women in sustainable development. They noted the need to include reference to the challenges posed by urbanization, called for increased support for disaster preparedness and highlighted the effects of trafficking and piracy.

In the afternoon, delegates discussed the Africa Report on Institutional and Strategic Frameworks for Sustainable Development, and International Environmental Governance. Delegates emphasized that all pillars of sustainable development be addressed in the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development, queried the role of a specialized agency, urged recognizing the rights of indigenous peoples and called for the green economy to address underlying structural deficiencies in the economy.
