Fifth session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP) to the Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) and Second session of MOP to the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs MOPP-2) and their Joint High-Level Segment

The fifth session of the Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the Aarhus Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention), and the second session of MOP (MOP 2) the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (PRTRs) will take place in Maastricht, the Netherlands from 30 June to 4 July 2014.

MOP 5 of the Aarhus Convention will convene from 30 June to 1 July and will address substantive issues including: access to information, including electronic information tools; public participation in decision-making; access to justice; and genetically modified organisms. The meeting will also discuss issues related to the promotion of the Convention and relevant developments and interlinkages, including: accession to the Convention by states from outside the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) region; promotion of the Convention’s principles in international forums; global and regional developments on issues related to Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development; update on UN Environment Programme (UNEP) initiatives on access to information, public participation and access to justice; and synergies between the Convention and other relevant multilateral environmental agreements and organizations. MOP 5 is also expected to adopt a work programme for 2015-2017.

MOP 2 of the Protocol on PRTRs will convene from 3-4 July and is expected to address issues including the status of ratification of the Protocol on PRTRs, promotion and capacity building, and procedures and mechanisms for facilitating the implementation of the Protocol. MOP 2 is expected to adopt a work programme for 2015-2017.

A joint high-level segment will take place on 2 July. Two thematic sessions will address the right to information and environmental democracy and the right to information and social media. Both MOPs will then consider, and be invited to adopt, the Maastricht Declaration.
