VIII. TOURISM RESOURCES:

This chapter focuses on tourism as both an opportunity for SIDS development and an activity that must be integrated with environmental and cultural concerns. This chapter was the source of little debate. A new paragraph on combatting illicit drug trafficking and money laundering was proposed, led to some debate and was eventually moved to Chapter X. Recommendations for national action include: ensure that tourism development and environmental management are mutually supportive; adopt integrated planning and policies to ensure sustainable tourism development; and adopt measures to protect the cultural integrity of SIDS. Recommendations for regional and international action include: encourage joint marketing and training programmes between SIDS; promote recognition of the value of tourism in SIDS to the international community; facilitate efforts at the national and regional levels to assess the overall impact of tourism, to plan sustainable tourism and develop eco- and cultural tourism.
