IISD RS will be providing coverage of the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit (APWS) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, which is organized on the theme of, “Water Security and Water-related Disaster Challenges: Leadership and Commitment.”
The Summit aims to set the water sustainability agenda for the Asia-Pacific region and provide a mandate for action, by engaging leaders in active dialogue with experts and stakeholders. IISD RS will report specifically on Focus Area Sessions taking place on 19 May, and a Leaders Forum on 20 May.
The Focus Area Sessions will address: economic, food and water security; urban water security; environmental water security; household water security; water risks and resilience; Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) process for a water-secure world; and water-related disaster challenges. Senior government officials, experts, donors and partners will discuss concrete solutions, commitments and implementation in their respective areas.
The Leaders Forum will be attended by Heads of State and Government from 50 Asia-Pacific countries, as well as cabinet ministers, private sector leaders, and leaders of international and regional organizations.
Over 500 delegates from Asia-Pacific countries, and over 700 individuals from organizations in Thailand, the region, and beyond are expected to attend the 2nd APWS and its related technical workshops and exhibitions.
The 2nd APWS is an initiative of the Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF), and builds on the work of the 1st APWS in May 2007, held in Beppu, Japan. The Summit is hosted by the Royal Thai Government in collaboration with the APWF and its international and regional partners, including the Asian Development Bank, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Network of Asian River Basin Organizations, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, the Global Water Partnership, as well as several UN agencies and sub-regional organizations.
The APWF was created following discussions at the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico in March 2006, as an independent regional network to identify and adopt solutions to water issues in the Asia-Pacific region. It was launched at the Asian Development Bank headquarters in September 2006.
IISD RS will be producing daily digital coverage and a summary report of the 2nd APWS. Return to this site on Sunday, 19 May 2013, to see our daily web coverage, and on Thursday, 23 May 2013, for a full report of the Summit.
