The seventh session of the Meeting of the Parties to the UN Economic Commission for Europe’s Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (UNECE Water Convention MOP7) will take place from 17-19 November 2015 in Budapest, Hungary.

This landmark meeting marks the transition of the UNECE Water Convention from a regional to a global multilateral framework for transboundary water cooperation, following a previous amendment that allows all UN Member States to accede to the Convention.

Around 300 representatives, including delegates from over 80 countries, will review progress on implementation and discuss the programme of work for 2016-18. MOP7 will consider establishing a reporting mechanism under the Convention, and will adopt new tools to assess the benefits of transboundary water cooperation and the water-food-energy-ecosystems nexus.

Delegates will also discuss partnerships for implementing the UN Convention on the Law of the Non-navigational Uses of International Watercourses (the UN International Watercourses Convention), which entered into force in 2014.

A high-level segment will take place on 17 November, opened by the President of Hungary. The high-level segment will focus on the opening of the UNECE Water Convention to all UN Member States, and on the Convention’s contribution to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and other global commitments.

The UNECE Water Convention was adopted in Helsinki in 1992 and entered into force in 1996. The Convention provides a framework for transboundary water cooperation and the sustainable management of surface and groundwater shared by countries. To date, 41 European countries are parties to the Convention. Since the opening of the Convention for global signature, other countries have begun processes for accession. The Meeting of Parties to the Convention takes place every three years.
