Johannesburg Climate Legacy Project
Between 24th August
- 4th September around 50,000 government, NGO and business
representatives from around the world will be converging on
Johannesburg to discuss and agree policies which will help to protect
our environment. It's an important event. But the necessary
flights, ground transport, and energy use at the venue will also
produce 500,000 tonnes of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2).
The Summit invites you to take part and 'neutralise' some of this 'hot
air'. For only $10 you can help fund a project that will reduce CO2
emissions in South Africa - by replacing fossil fuels in hospitals
with solar panels, for example. These CO2
savings will
compensate for the Summit's emissions and so make it Carbon Neutral.

Global Judges Symposium, 18-20
August

UNEP is convening a Global Judges Symposium on Sustainable Development
and the Role of Law in Johannesburg from 18 to 20 August 2002. The
Symposium will be hosted by the Chief Justice of South Africa, Rt.
Hon. Mr. Justice A. Chaskalson. Chief Justices and other senior judges
from approximately 70 countries around the world, -both developing and
developed - and representative of the different geographical regions
and legal systems are participating in the Symposium. The overall
objective of the Symposium is to foster a better-informed and more
active judiciary advancing the rule of law in the area of sustainable
development. This will be achieved through information sharing and
increasing awareness, especially among judges from different regions
of the world, and also through follow up activities especially in
regard to capacity building of the Judiciary as well governmental and
non-governmental stakeholders engaged in promoting the development,
implementation and enforcement of environmental law. The outcome of

Water Dome – No water, no Future,

Bahá'í International Community's statement to the WSSD
"Religion and Development at the Crossroads: Convergence or
Divergence?" addresses the role the world's religions can and should
play in fostering peace and unity among all peoples and in promoting
sustainable development. It calls on the United Nations to take
steps to involve religions substantively in the work of the UN and
challenges religious leaders to prove themselves worthy partners in
this work by rejecting fanaticism and embracing freedom of
conscience for all peoples, including their own followers. The

Parliamentary Dialogue on Partnerships for Sustainable Development
GLOBE
Southern Africa Second Parliamentary Conference ahead of the WSSD

bring together about 80 parliamentarians and a host of different
civil society organizations to consider the role of partnerships in
taking forward the outcomes of the WSSD. We will examine existing
partnerships in the region under the issues of Financing,
Governance, Freshwater and Energy and identify positive elements and
current barriers to their effectiveness. The intention is to come up
with practical suggestions and recommendations that parliamentarians
can implement in terms of removing legislative barriers that are
currently impeding the optimal effectiveness of multi-stakeholder

will also inform the debate on the Type 2 Outcomes of the WSSD.

Earth Dialogues: Globalization and
Sustainable Development
- Is Ethics the Missing Link?

This event was held from 21-23 February 2002 in Lyon, France.
Organized by Green Cross International, Earth Dialogues provided a
forum for debate on how to forge the necessary links between
globalization, sustainable development and ethics. The event included
eight roundtables, which addressed four themes: the ethical challenges
in promoting sustainable development; the role of ethical norms in
promoting sustainable development; policy recommendations for action
and implementation; and political strategies for Johannesburg and
beyond. Roundtable one, comprising representatives of international
economic institutions, made a number of policy recommendations for
action and implementation in the areas of trade, finance, and the role
of the World Bank/IMF. Roundtable two, attended by representatives of
business and industry, made recommendations for mechanisms of
international regulation and means of implementing sustainable
development policies for business and administrations. Roundtable
three, comprising members of media and communication, provided ideas
for concrete actions to promote media coverage of issues related to
sustainable development.
Roundtable four, consisting of parliamentarians and government
representatives, outlined 12 policy recommendations for Johannesburg,
including the establishment of a World Parliament, a World Environment
Court and the development of professional ethical codes. Roundtable
five, including representatives of international institutions,
addressed ethics, governance, subsidiarity, international
organizations, and the agenda for Monterrey and Johannesburg.
Roundtable six panelists, representing religious and spiritual
leaders, identified and elaborated on key areas for collaboration
between religious and other institutions. NGO representatives at
roundtable seven recommended a focus on partnership, coalition, and
public awareness for Johannesburg, as well as support to small
enterprises and an international fund for sustainable development.
Roundtable eight, comprising of former foreign ministers, recommended
that the Earth Dialogue organizers form a Political Action Committee
to look more thoroughly at key issues and put pressure on participants
at the World Summit for Sustainable Development to deliver on the

Second Sub-regional Consultation Workshop for
the Civil Society Organizations

Thirty-nine delegates from ten West African nations met in Aburi,
Ghana from 19-22 February 2002 for the second Sub-regional
Consultation Workshop for the Civil Society Organizations involved in
the WSSD process. The workshop followed up on work begun during the
group's first workshop, in Accra, Ghana, last year.
The attendees planned to strengthen their joint capacity in terms of
lobbying and advocacy; to develop a common West African position
toward the New African Initiative and the proposed Danish and South
African Global Deals; and to discuss how they might build on their

Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2002

This meeting was held from 8-11 February 2002 in New Delhi, India.
Organized by the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI), the Summit was
attended by almost 300 participants, including heads of governments,
and representatives of business, industry, and NGOs. The overall theme
of the meeting was "Ensuring Sustainable Livelihoods: Challenges for
Governments, Corporates and Civil Society," with the aim of
revitalizing global commitment to sustainable development as a shared
future goal. The topics addressed during the eleven plenary sessions
were: Agenda 21 - ensuring sustainable livelihoods; financing
development - focused, transparent and pro-poor systems; governance
structures and processes for sustainable development; managing natural
resources for society - welfare and health implications; defining the
stakes, engaging the stakeholders; creating business models for the
poor - expanding sustainable development; food security and basic
human needs; climate change and sustainable energy; technological
leapfrogging - the lure and the limits; ministers of the environment -
challenges at Rio+10; and leadership for sustainable livelihoods. At
the close of the meeting, TERI Director R. K. Pachauri declared that,
based on the success of this meeting, the Delhi Sustainable

International Conference on
Freshwater
3 - 7 December
2001, Bonn, Germany
The International Conference on Freshwater took place from 3-7
December 2001 at in Bonn, Germany, with 118 governments, 47
intergovernmental organizations and 73 representatives of major groups
in attendance. The Conference was convened as a preparatory step on
freshwater issues for the upcoming WSSD. Delegates met in Plenary and
Working Group sessions to consider issues of water access, scarcity,
pollution and natural disasters, as well as financing and capacity
building. A closed-door ministerial session considered the equitable
and sustainable use of water resources and the mobilization of
financial resources for infrastructure investment. The Conference
considered the Recommendations for Action (RFA) that will be presented
to the WSSD and its preparatory process. The other conference outputs
are the 'Bonn Keys' – a one-page summary of the RFA, the Working Group
Reports, Conference Report and Ministerial Declaration, as well as the
Conference Issue Paper and Thematic Background Papers, which were

Global Conference on Oceans and
Coasts at Rio+10: Assessing Progress, Addressing Continuing and New
Challenges

The Global Conference on Oceans and Coasts
at Rio+10: Toward the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in
Johannesburg took place from 3-7 December 2001 at the UNESCO
headquarters in Paris, France. Conference participants sought to:
provide an overall assessment of progress achieved on oceans and
coasts in the ten years since the UNCED; identify new and continuing
challenges; examine cross-cutting issues among various ocean and
coastal sectors; consider options for concerted action on outstanding
cross-sectoral issues; and provide recommendations for the oceans and

During six days, November 19-24, the Heinrich Boell Foundation and
UNED Forum will hold an online forum to discuss the implications of
September 11, 2001 on the Johannesburg process. We have invited
eminent intellectuals from all over the globe to contribute short
opinion articles as "Think Pieces" to start the debate. Technical

text.
The terrorist attacks of September 11 seem to have changed world
politics dramatically. New and unexpected alliances are forged, the
priorities of governments are reassessed, public attention is
focused on the threat of terrorism. A global "war against terrorism"
seems to be unleashed, that is geared to stay with us the coming
years.
The Heinrich Boell Foundation and UNED Form, both organisations
active in the Johannesburg process, joined forces to create a space
for a global debate on these questions. We wish to contribute to
create a common understanding on the significance of the recent
developments for the Johannesburg process.

Planet:
An International Forum on the World Summit on Sustainable
Development 2002

The International Institute for
Environment and Development (IIED) held its 30th Anniversary
Conference from 12-13 November 2001, in London, UK. The Anniversary
Conference was comprised of a one-day workshop followed by a one-day
conference, and was held in collaboration with the UK Department for
International Development (DFID) and Foreign and Commonwealth
Office, Canadian International Development Agency, Department of
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada, Royal Danish
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sweden's International Development
Cooperation Agency.
On Monday, 12 November, the
International Workshop, hosted by the Canadian High Commission,
served to outline issues, present themes and generate discussion.
The conclusions of the workshop were presented to the International
Conference, which was convened on Tuesday, 13 November and hosted by
the Trade Union Congress. More than 450 participants attended the
workshop and conference, including representatives from governments,
NGOs, multilateral organizations, academia and the private sector.
Carrying a theme of "Equity for a Small
Planet," the purpose of this event was to convene an International
Forum that would consider the dynamic interactions between processes
of globalization and efforts to protect local livelihoods, with an
emphasis on perspectives from the South, and to clarify many of the
critical issues and emerging priorities to be forwarded for
consideration at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development
(WSSD) in Johannesburg. The outputs of the conference consisted of a

Reykjavik Conference on Responsible Fisheries
1 - 4 October 2001,
Reykjavik, Iceland
The Reykjavik Conference on Responsible Fisheries in
the Marine Ecosystem met from 1-4 October 2001 at the University
Cinema and Conference Center in Reykjavik, Iceland. The conference was
organized by the Government of Iceland and the United Nations Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), and was co-sponsored by the Government
of Norway. The meeting was attended by over 400 participants,
including representatives from FAO Member States and other UN Member
States, UN bodies and agencies, intergovernmental and nongovernmental
organizations, academic and scientific institutions, and industry.
The conference presented stakeholders with an
opportunity to gather and review the best available knowledge on
marine and ecosystem issues. It sought to establish a means by which
ecosystem considerations could be included in capture fisheries
management, and to identify future challenges and relevant strategies.
To achieve these objectives, participants met in plenary sessions and
a Scientific Symposium, in which invited experts presented their
research and views and participants engaged in general discussions and
raised questions from the floor. Following an opening Plenary session
in which keynote speakers set the stage for the meeting and provided
various stakeholders' perspectives, delegates convened for the
Scientific Symposium, which took place on Monday and Tuesday, 1-2
October. During the Symposium, participants focused on key scientific
issues for ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM), including the
dynamics of marine ecosystems, the role of people in marine
ecosystems, and methods to incorporate ecosystem considerations into
fisheries management. They also heard representatives of industry
present their perspectives on EBFM. On Wednesday, 3 October, delegates
met in Plenary to hear statements from countries, NGOs,
intergovernmental organizations and UN agencies.
Following field trips to local fisheries sites on
Thursday morning, 4 October, delegates reconvened for a final Plenary
in the evening and approved the Reykjavik Declaration on Responsible
Fisheries in the Marine Ecosystem. An open-ended drafting committee
established at the start of the conference formulated this Declaration
during intensive negotiations. The Declaration will be submitted to
the World Summit on Sustainable Development for its consideration.

What Earth Summit 2002 Should be Trying

Key writers and thinkers on sustainable development will start the
debate. Everyone is encouraged to join in. Preparations for the World
Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 are well under way, emphasizing
a transparent and participatory approach. This electronic forum hopes
to initiate a focused and constructive public discussion on some of
the priority issues. We invite people to share their ideas, knowledge
and diverse perspectives. The results of the debate will be taken
forward to inform the next preparatory meeting for the WSSD.

Indonesian People's Forum (IPF) - A
Parallel Event with PrepCom IV
24 May - 6 June 2002, Bali, Indonesia
A coalition of 71 civil society groups all over Indonesia has been
preparing a parallel event to the upcoming Prepcom 4 of WSSD. Through
this Forum, IPF will facilitate national and international civil
society in influencing the official process and outcomes. IPF will
also facilitate voices and concerns of people that cannot go the
official process by holding several activities, such as strategic
meetings, workshops, dialogue with countries' delegates, etc.

Meeting of Main Groups Networks of
Latin America and the Caribbean
Meeting for NGOs in the UNECE working towards the WSSD
22 - 23 September 2001, Geneva, Switzerland
ANPED hosted an NGO meeting providing input into the UN Economic
Commission for Europe (ECE) Ministerial Meeting preparing for the
World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. On September 22 and
23, 80 NGOs in the UNECE region discussed their priorities for the
World Summit, and they also expressed their concerns with the
preparations so far.

Almost thirty years after the first
international conference on human environment, and ten years after the
worldwide adoption of Agenda 21 based on the demand for sustainable
development by governments of all nations, the trends of environment
degradation and poverty are still not curbed. Besides the increase in
population and the increase in consumption, industry production is
still one of the main causes to many environmental problems. The
business sector is often the one to be blamed for increasing the gap
between the rich and poor. However, powered by the new technological
innovations, globalization of market economy, and knowledge and
investment capitals, the business sector will remain one of the
influential forces to shape the future of the world.

Reykjavik Conference on Responsible Fisheries
1 - 4 October 2001, Reykjavik, Iceland
This conference, which convened in Reykjavik,
Iceland from 1-4 October, presented stakeholders with an opportunity
to gather and review the best available knowledge on marine and
ecosystem issues. It sought to establish a means by which ecosystem
considerations could be included in capture fisheries management, and

UNEP MEETING ON COMPLIANCE, ENFORCEMENT
AND DISPUTE SETTLEMENT IN MEAs AND THE WTO

The meeting, organized in collaboration with the WTO, will focus on
concrete examples of where trade or WTO rules can enhance or inhibit
compliance with and enforcement of MEAs, and on concrete examples of
how the reliance on negotiation, conciliation and soft-law compliance
mechanisms in MEAs have proven to be effective in MEA implementation.
It will also develop input for discussions taking place on
international environmental governance in the context of preparations

Children's Conference on the Environment 2002

Columbia, Canada
Hosted by Victoria,
British Columbia in cooperation with UNEP, this conference is
held after every two years for children between 10 to 12 years. It is
inspired by the recognition that children need to be active
participants in environmental issues. It is also a follow-up to the
1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, the
Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro. At the Summit, Agenda 21, an
international plan for sustainable development, was agreed on. The
plan encouraged national governments to pay more attention to concerns
and opinions of children on the environment.
