On its fourth and final day, the Second Meeting of Signatories (MoS2) to the CMS Raptors MoU concluded in Trondheim, Norway, after agreeing to meet early to get the agenda underway.
In the morning, delegates reviewed the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) WorkPlan and discussed financial and administrative matters, notably current financial status and future funding. Delegates applauded the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi for providing four additional years of core funding to support work on raptors and dugongs in the Gulf and wider African-Eurasian region. Delegates then discussed the African vulture crisis and were introduced to the African-Eurasian Vulture Multi-species Action Plan (MSAP) to support conservation efforts across flyways. The meeting continued with a summary and adoption of the Meeting Outcomes, wherein delegates adopted amendments to Annex 1 and 3 of the MoU and “took note” of many outstanding issues to be forwarded to MoS3.
Two side events occurred during the morning session, on: “Conservation issues of Malagasy migratory birds of prey,” organized by the Ministry of Environment, Madagascar; and “Quantifying, monitoring and tackling illegal killing and taking of birds in the Mediterranean and beyond,” organized by BirdLife International.
Lyle Glowka, CMS Office - Abu Dhabi, thanked all participating bodies, noting that "good things happen when people share a passion and believe in a mission." Chair Øystein Størkersen, Norway, closed the meeting, thanking delegates and encouraging them to liaise across sectors and networks to prevent the illegal killing, taking and trade (IKB). The meeting closed at 12.28 p.m.
