ITTC-43 Enters Second Day

On Tuesday, the forty-third session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) entered its second day of deliberations in Yokohama, Japan. Participants met in morning and afternoon Council sessions to: receive a report on the Annual Review and Assessment of the World Timber Situation; discuss preparations for entry into force of the ITTA, 2006; review the Yokohama Action Plan and discuss a draft of the new new action plan for 2008-2013; review progress under the Biennial Work Programme 2005-2007; and receive an overview of the draft Biennial Work Programme 2008-2009.

In the late afternoon, participants convened in concurrent sessions of the Committees on Economic Information and Market Intelligence; the Committee on Forest Industry; and the Committee on Reforestation and Forest Management. Following this, the Committee on Finance and Administration met in the evening to discuss the relief of Liberia's debt to the ITTO.

Side-Event: CSAG Panel Discussion

The Civil Society Advisory Group held a side event to discuss the proposed Biennial Work Program 2008-2009, and featured presentations by the Rights and Resources Institute, FSC-Cameroon, Forest Peoples and Community Development, and the Governments of Brazil and Cameroon.

Committee Session CRF

The Committee on Restoration and Forest Management (CRF), chaired by Flip van Helden, the Netherlands, met on Tuesday afternoon. They discussed the review of implementation of projects, a request for a project extension, and a special ITTO monitoring and evaluation mission to a project on sustainable mangrove management in Ecuador.

Committee Session CEM/CFI

The Committee on Economic Information and Market Intelligence (CEM), chaired by Chantal Adingra (Côte d'Ivoire), and the Committee on Forest Industry (CFI), chaired by Dani Pitoyo (Indonesia), met on Tuesday afternoon to discuss policy issues including comparison criteria for forest certification; and capacity building for statistical work and continued work on country studies on timber market.
