PLENARY:

On the second day of WSSD Africa delegates met briefly in Plenary to hear a progress report from the Chair of the Drafting Committee. Chair Osita Anaedu (left) reported on the Committee's Monday evening session. The Committee produced a draft Ministerial Statement which was made available in the afternoon. Anaedu expressed gratitude for helpful inputs to the drafting process, including the Assessment report, the draft Ministerial Statement, the report of the Cairo roundtable of eminent persons, and the ideas from stakeholders such as NGOs and industry.

Chair Chiyenge (right) stressed that the Drafting Committee should also consider the observations made in Plenary during discussions of the Assessment report on Monday, 15 October. She re-opened the discussions of the assessment report, but there were no comments from delegates, thus Plenary adjourned at 10:45 am, giving way to the continuation of work by the Drafting Committee.
AFRICAN MINISTERIAL STATEMENT: DRAFTING COMMITTEE

The Drafting Committee convened for most of the day and into the evening in an effort to prepare a complete draft Ministerial Statement before the arrival of Ministers on Wednesday, 17 October.

The drafters wanted a text shorter than originally presented to delegates on Monday morning, and drew heavily from the Millennium Declaration, the New African Initiative, the Cairo Eminent Persons meeting, the outcomes of the SADC Southern Cone consultation in Mauritius and other regional preparatory events. There discussions highlighted a number of key aspects such as the constraints felt by Africa through the pressures of world politics, including globalization, the need to emphasize the qualitative aspects of economic growth and development to improve living standards. The eradication of poverty emerged as a main priority. The drafting continued late into the night and had not been concluded by the time we stopped coverage of the meeting at 11:00 pm.
