Twelfth Regular Session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

Highlights for Tuesday, 20 October 2009

Delegates to the twelfth regular session of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA-12) continued to discuss issues relating to the multi-year programme of work (MYPOW), including on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), and specifically relating to: the state of the world’s PGRFA; progress since CGRFA-11; and future work, including on policies and arrangements for enhancing utilization of PGRFA, and on underutilized crops and wild relatives. In the afternoon, delegates discussed animal genetic resources for food and agriculture (AnGRFA)in relation to the follow-up to the Interlaken Conference, which includes the implementation and financing of the Global Plan of Action for animal genetic resources, and future work. They also met for an evening session to discuss proposed text on policies and arrangements for ABS for GRFA.

Modibo Tiémoko Traoré, Assistant Director-General, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, FAO, emphasized the importance of protecting and diversifying PGRFA, and all GRFA, to ensure sustainable agriculture production and help cope with the effects of climate change.

Vice-Chair Brad Fraleigh (Canada) introduced the report of the Intergovernmental Technical Working Group on Plant Genetic Resources (ITWG-PG4) and the document detailing follow-up to recommendations on PGRFA.

Elcio Guimarâes, FAO, introduced the Second Report on the State of the World's PGRFA (SOW-2), stressing that FAO has produced an authoritative assessment of the sector.
