Fourth Session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

The fourth session of the Governing Body (GB 4) of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (the Treaty or ITPGR) convened from 14-18 March 2011, in Bali, Indonesia. The session was successful in tackling its diverse agenda and adopting significant outcomes. In particular, the Governing Body adopted procedures and mechanisms on compliance, and reached consensus on the long-standing item of the financial rules of the Governing Body. It also adopted a work programme and budget for the 2012-2013 biennium including a moderate budget increase, and resolutions on a number of items including on farmers’ rights, sustainable use, cooperation with other organizations, and implementation of the Funding Strategy.
On Friday evening, following adoption of resolutions and the report, delegates heard regional and closing statements. During the customary exchange of courtesies, Chair Cosima Hufler (Austria) expressed her appreciation to Earth Negotiations Bulletin for coverage of the session and to Switzerland for making it possible by providing additional financial support. The meeting was gaveled to a close at 11:16 pm. |
