The United Nations International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) was held from 5-13 September 1994 in Cairo, Egypt. During this two week period world leaders, high ranking officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations and United Nations agencies gathered to agree on a Programme of Action.


FOLLOW-UP TO THE CONFERENCE

The United Nations General Assembly has held debate on this matter. The Earth Negotiations Bulletin has published a summary of this debate as Vol. 3 No. 8.


A HISTORICAL RECORD OF THE CONFERENCE

DOCUMENTATION PREPARED BEFORE THE CAIRO CONFERENCE:

The Coordinating Committee for the US Network for Cairo has published updates during June, July and August. Also, Bela Abzug has sent an open letter to members of the Women's Caucus.

The July issue of the "ICPD 94" newsletter is available on the POPIN gopher in English, Frenchand Spanish. This issue includes information on what to expect in Cairo, a proposed timetable for the Conference, information for Conference participantsand news on NGO accreditation and representation.

The official documentation from before the Conference has been posted by the United Nations:

  • The document under negotiation at the ICPD was the draft Programme of Action of the Conference (A/CONF.171/L.1) which is available in English French and Spanish.
