18-22 July 2011 | Geneva, Switzerland

Highlights for Wednesday, 20 July 2011
CITESOn Wednesday, AC 25 convened in working groups throughout the day. The working group on snakes discussed studying the feasibility of captive breeding for the skin trade, capacity building, forensic identification, and other identification materials. The RST working group continued its discussions on the review and at the end of the day began fine-tuning its recommendations for species to be included in the RST, such as Ptyas mucosus (oriental ratsnake), Naja spp (cobra) and Pythons.

The working group on turtles reviewed recommendations contained in the IUCN Species Survival Commission Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group study on the conservation of and trade in CITES-listed tortoises and freshwater turtles in Asia. The sturgeons working group discussed, inter alia, international support for the range states, including from CITES and FAO.

The sharks working group held detailed discussions, including on: regulations on finning; a questionnaire for better reporting on sharks; and the need for species-specific recommendations. The other groups that convened were on: ranching, periodic review and nomenclature. The Committee working group discussions will conclude on Thursday before the AC re-convenes in plenary.
