The 5th Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-V) will convene from 28-30 October 2015 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, on the theme “Africa, climate change and sustainable development: What is at stake at Paris and beyond?” Taking place just a few weeks before the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), CCDA-V aims to provide “a moment of reflection” on the performance of the UNFCCC in achieving its stated objectives of emissions reduction and sustainable development, with a focus on addressing the climate change, sustainable development and equity issues provided for in Article 2 of the Convention. The Conference will build on the outcomes of sub-regional ‘Africa Climate Talks’ (ACTs) held in advance of the meeting, with the aim of further articulating and crystallizing the key messages to reflect African perspectives in global climate change governance and sustainable development. CCDA-V will open with a high-level dialogue on the overall conference theme, followed by plenary discussions to introduce the three sub-themes: global governance of climate change; climate change and sustainable development in Africa; and the state and Africa’s prospects for sustainable development under climate change. In addition, pre- and post-conference events, as well as diverse side events, will take place, with prominent roles for civil society organizations, gender groups, young people and farmers. The CCDA conference series was conceived as an annual forum to enable linkages between climate science and development policy by promoting transparent discussions between key stakeholders in the climate and development community. CCDA seeks to mainstream climate information into decision making and strengthen capacities focusing on climate sensitive sectors such as agriculture, food security, energy and transport. The conferences are organized by the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, an initiative of the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Development Bank (AfDB). |
