Saturday, 27 February

On Saturday, 27 February, participants convened for a final day at the Fourth International Conference on CBA to Climate Change.

In the morning, participants met in a plenary session to hear feedback from the work of the conference's informal working group. They then met in a final session to chart the way forward on CBA activities, including the work to further develop the Global Initiative on Community-Based Adaptation.

Tim Clarke, EU, underlined the EU’s support for climate change initiatives.
Euster Kibona, Tanzania’s Environmental Protection and Management Services, thanked participants for a fruitful session.
Richard Muyungi, Acting Director of Environment, Tanzania, stressed his government's continued support and collaboration.
Friday, 26 February

Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change

The Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation (CBA) to Climate Change went into its third day on Friday, 26 February 2010.

In the morning, participants met in a plenary session that focused on the scaling up and replication of best CBA practices. They also met in parallel thematic sessions on: vulnerable groups; specifically women and children; the role of ecosystems in adaptation; disaster risk reduction; and CBA methodologies.

In the afternoon, participants met in a plenary session on funding CBA.

Rachel Berger, Practical Action, chaired the morning plenary session on scaling up and replicating best practices.
Douglas Gumbo, Practical Action-Zimbabwe, spoke about the critical success factors for scaling up CBA technologies in semi-arid areas.
Mohamed Siddig Suliman, Practical Action-Sudan, presented on scaling up work to increase resilience to drought by strengthening civil society organizations.
Charlotte Sterrett, Oxfam, discussed incorporating sustainable livelihoods, disaster risk reduction and natural resource management into climate change adaptation approaches.
Thursday, 25 February

Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change

The Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change went into its second day on Thursday, 25 February 2010.

In the morning, participants met in a plenary session that focused on CBA and agriculture. They attended parallel thematic sessions on: the economics of CBA; CBA in French-speaking countries; drylands and pastoralism; and urban areas.

In the afternoon, participants met in a plenary session on managing and communicating knowledge on good CBA.

Khalfan M. Saleh, IFAD, presented on agriculture projects in the Tanzanian islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.
Supaporn Anuchiracheeva, OXFAM GB, presented on a project to encourage Jasmin rice farmers in Thailand to use organic methods and diversify agricultural systems. 
Dalitso Kafuwa, Malawi, emphasized that organic manures are key in improving the soil quality.
Wednesday, 24 February

Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate ChangeThe Fourth International Conference on Community-Based Adaptation to Climate Change – organized by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Tanzania’s Environment Protection Management Services (EPMS) and the Ring Alliance – held its opening plenary session in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on Wednesday, 24 February 2010.

Participants heard opening remarks from Saleemul Huq, IIED, Louise Chamberlain, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Richard Muyungi, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) focal point for Tanzania, before breaking into parallel thematic sessions on strengthening institutions for community-based adaptation, water, building adaptive capacity, and insurance and microfinance.

In the afternoon, participants met in a session on policy linkages, and to hear reports from two days of field trips that took place in Tanzania before the start of the conference.
