OPENING CEREMONY: |
KEYNOTE SESSION: |
Secretary General WOO Ki-jong, Presidential Committee on Green Growth, Republic of Korea, highlighted Korea’s strategy on climate change, which is based on the vision of low-carbon green-growth. |
Paul Ekins, University College London, discussed modeling low carbon futures at the United Kingdom Energy Research Center (UKERC). |

SESSION 1: GHG REDUCTION ANALYSIS MODELS IN ANNEX 1 COUNTRIES |
L-R: Janusz Cofala, International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA); Keigo Akimoto, Research institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth; and Mattia Romani, London School of Economics. |
L-R: Warwick McKibbin, Australia National University; Ferenc Toth, International Atomic Agency (IAEA); AHN Young-hwan, Greenhouse Gas Inventory & Research Center of Korea (GIR). |
Janusz Cofala, IIASA, presented IIASA’s GHG – Air Pollution Interactions and Synergies (GAINS) Model, which integrates analysis of multiple pollutions and their effects, including health impacts, vegetation damage and radiative forcing through GHG emissions or via aerosols and ozone. |
Keigo Akimoto, Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth, Japan, noted that pledged 2020 targets use different baseline years and marginal abatement costs vary by country; Japan’s marginal abatement costs are high relative to US and EU costs. |
Mattia Romani, London School of Economics, He suggested that emissions will be reduced through higher efficiency and fuel shift, such as electrifying transport and industry. |
Ferenc Toth, IAEA, noted progress over the last twenty years and the enormous diversity of models today. |
Warwick McKibbin, Australia National University, highlighted that there are many ways to see the world, that explicit models force you to write down assumptions and that the value of models are not only the numbers that emerge from them. |
AHN Young-hwan, GIR, said the presentations demonstrate the need for bold up-front investment in decarbonization and that the costs of such action will not be so large due, inter alia, to co-benefits and increased employment. |

SESSION 2: GHG REDUCTION ANALYSIS MODELS IN NON-ANNEX 1 COUNTRIES |
L-R: SHIN Dong Chun, Yonsei University; Charles Marpaung, Asian Institute of Technology; Charlie Heaps, Stockholm Environmental Institute (SEI) and LEE Kihoon, Chungnam National University |
Rita Mathur, The Energy and Resources Institute, presented on securing low-carbon pathways in India. |
Abul Quasem Al-Amin, University of Malaya, reviewed impacts of climate change on Malaysia and the government`s policy responses. |
Kejun Jiang, Energy Research Institute, discussed low carbon and emission scenarios up to 2050 in China. |
YOO Seung Jick, GIR, presented the experiences of modeling GHG reduction goals in Korea. |
LEE Kihoon, Changnam University, suggested that modelers need to: develop common terms to find consensus; address risk and uncertainty in more detail; apply models to regional versus global levels to address carbon leakage; and concentrate on communication and networking. |
Charlie Heaps, SEI, noted that modeling is a new area of research that is rapidly maturing. He said it is important to separate science and policy, but that communicating results of the models is important. |
