Highlights for Tuesday, 21 October 2008

 

The first European Forest Week opened on Tuesday, 21 October 2008, in Rome, Italy, during the joint meeting of the Sixty-sixth session of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Timber Committee and the Thirty-fourth session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) European Forestry Commission. During the morning, plenary heard opening statements, addressed organizational matters, and considered the topic of Forests and Climate Change. In the afternoon, participants met in parallel policy dialogues, and the Timber Committee’s Market Discussions.

Jim Butler, Deputy Director-General, FAO, opened the session, which was moderated by Jan Heino, Assistant Director-General, FAO. Lars Peder Brekk, Norway’s Minister for Agriculture and Food and Co-Chair of the Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forests in Europe, Paulo Garonna, Deputy Executive Secretary of the UNECE and Benito Marin Herero, on behalf of the European Commission, made opening remarks.

SESSION ON FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE
The morning plenary discussion on forests and climate change highlighted the need for country-level assessments, the carbon sequestration and substitution roles of forests, an integrated approach to climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report's chapter on ecosystem services provided by forests and the impacts of climate change.

ANNUAL MARKET DISCUSSIONS

 


The market discussions in the afternoon focused on forests and climate change, green building, certification, and wood raw material markets. PARALLEL SESSIONS:

 
The parallel policy dialogues addressed improving forest law enforcement and governance, the new forest policy of the Russian Federation, the role of wood products in climate change mitigation, forest owners and climate change, and increasing knowledge about adaptation of forests to climate change.
