Daily Web Coverage |Mon 3| |Tue 4| |Wed 5| |Thu 6| |Fri 7| Highlights from Monday, 3 February 2003 The International Conference on the Contribution of Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management (CICI 2003) opened on Monday morning, 3 February 2003. Participants heard opening statements from the Executive Director of Forest Service of Guatemala (INAB) and the Guatemalan Minister of Agriculture, and the Chair of the Board of Trustees of CIFOR, among others. Background papers on strengthening the elaboration and application of Criteria and Indicators (C&I) for Sutainable Forest Management (SFM) and on promoting political commitment for the use of C&I as tools for SFM were presented, and two Working Groups met in the afternoon to further discuss these topics. Luis Ernesto Barrera Garavito, Forest Service of Guatemala (INAB) Executive Director, welcomed participants and outlined the objectives of CICI 2003.

Edin Barrientos, Guatemalan Minister of Agriculture, underscored the usefulness of C&I for SFM and expressed support for binding criteria.

Jag Mohan Maini, CIFOR Chair of the Board of Trustees, highlighted the substantial progress already achieved in the area of C&I for SFM, and outlined remaining challenges. Froylan Castaneda, FAO, outlined the organization of the conference for the week, explaining that background papers and case studies will be presented, working groups will convene to discuss each of the conference's objectives, and delegates will have the opportunity to participate in field trips.

Marrku Simula, Finland presented an overview of the nine international C&I initatives, highlighting ITTO, Montreal, Pan-European/Helsinki, and African Timber Organization (ATO) processes as the most active intiatives. He compared the levels of application, hierarchical structure, contents of national-level criteria, development processes and definitions of existing C&I processes.




Robert Hendricks, USA discussed strengthening the elaboration and application of C&I for SFM.



José Antonio Prado D., Instituto Forestal (Chile) discussed the need for promoting political commitment for the use of C&I as tools for SFM. Working Group I: Working Group I, chaired by Christina Amoako-Nuama (Ghana),  convened on Monday afternoon  to discuss strengthening the elaboration and application of C&I for SFM. The Working Group began with three case study presentations, followed by a discussion. Working Group II:


Working Group II, chaired by Ingwald Gschwandtl (Austria) right,  convened on Monday afternoon to develop a set of recommendations on how to promote political commitment for the use of C&I as tools for SFM.
