Working Group III, chaired by Christina Amoako-Nuama (Ghana), considered three case studies on stakeholder involvement and discussed recommendations on strengthening institutional capacity and stakeholder partnerships. Working Group IV, chaired by Ingwald Gschwandtl (Austria), discussed the contribution of C&I to the work of the UNFF and to international initiatives on indicators related to sustainable development. Chaired by Christina Amoako-Nuama (Ghana), considered three case studies on stakeholder involvement and discussed recommendations on strengthening institutional capacity and stakeholder partnerships.

Marvin Brown, American Forest and Paper Association, described "The Roundtable for SFM", the ongoing US stakeholder process to develop C&I, highlighting independent professional facilitation and a large highly diverse group of interests as its important features.


Dr Ram Prasad, India, presented outcomes of an ITTO project aimed at increasing capacities of the grassroots communities for assessing benefits of SFM.


Jari Parviainen, Finland, presented a case study on strengthening institutional capacity and stakeholders partnerships for implementing and refining C&I in Finland. He described the link between pan-European set of C&I and developing national C&I sets in Finland. The Working Group then continued the discussion regarding recommendations for: capacity building and institutional strengthening; public outreach and education; exchange of experiences and information; and research.


On public outreach and education, a participant from Canada recommended taking into account the divergence of the stakeholders' views. He also called for better utilization of data related to forest issues collected by different bodies.


A participant from Guatemala shared Guatemala's successful experiences of creating so called dialogue tables among stakeholders involved in SFM and noted the need for international cooperation to reinforce creation and functioning of similar mechanisms at national and regional levels. Working Group IV:


Chaired by Ingwald Gschwandtl (Austria) (left), discussed the contribution of C&I to the work of the UNFF and to international initiatives on indicators related to sustainable development. The Group focused its discussion on the following key themes: increased coordination and collaboration; monitoring, assessment and reporting to the UNFF and international fora; and global approaches to forest-related C&I.


A representative from FAO described the FAO-led Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) and its possible links to C&I processes. Noting that CICI 2003 has identified the need for global harmonization of C&I processes, he explained that the GFRA process is an important reporting framework for C&I-related information.




A participant from the UNFF highlighted the recently established CPF taskforce on streamlining forest-related reporting. A Brazilian participant expressed concern about the concept of a common set of C&I, and supported taking a more cautious approach involving strengthening coordination, collaboration and communication. Plenary was convened in the afternoon to hear Preliminary Reports of Working Group III and IV presented by WG III Chair Christina Amoako-Nuama (Ghana), and WG IV Chair Ingwald Gschwandtl (Austria) respectively. Participants discussed conclusions and recommendations regarding objectives  3 and 4, and debated the introduced text regarding objective 4 by India.
