Highlights from Friday, 3 September
On the last day of the Oaxaca Workshop on Forest Governance, Decentralization and REDD+ in Latin America and the Caribbean, participants discussed rights, livelihoods and forests. In the morning plenary, they heard presentations on: carbon rights in Mexico, Brazil and Costa Rica; indigenous territories and REDD+; and community forest management and REDD+. Participants then discussed these issues in a roundtable session. In the afternoon, participants were engaged in “open spaces,” discussions organized by various organizations on operationalizing specific issues. They then discussed the Workshop’s report that will be submitted to the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF). José Carlos Fernandez Ugalde, Head of the International Affairs and Finance Unit of the Mexican National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR), closed the meeting at 6:16 pm.

Highlights from Thursday, 2 September
On Thursday, participants of the Oaxaca Workshop continued discussing forest governance and REDD+ in plenary and roundtable sessions. In the morning, they heard presentations on landscape change, forests management and REDD+, and on forest finance and finance for REDD+. In the afternoon, participants took part in roundtable sessions to discuss the issues presented in the morning plenary.

Bastiaan Louman, Centre for Tropical Agricultural Research and Teaching (CATIE), spoke on drivers of deforestation and sustainable forest management (SFM).
 
Pablo Pacheco, CIFOR, described the trends of landscape transformation in three Latin American countries.

Herman Savenije, Tropenbos International, said that formal financing instruments are diverse but their suitability and access to forest peoples is often limited.

Highlights from Wednesday, 1 September
On Wednesday, Workshop participants had the opportunity to take part in one of four field trips around Oaxaca, showcasing sustainable forest management linked to community enterprises and a diversified use of natural resources. Participants visited communities running enterprises such as ecotourism, handicraft-making, a tree nursery, timber milling, and water bottling. In the evening, WWF hosted a side event describing REDD+ related activities in Mexico.

Highlights from Tuesday, 31 August
The Oaxaca Workshop on Forest Governance, Decentralization and REDD+ in Latin America and the Caribbean opened today in Oaxaca, Mexico. This country-led initiative in support of the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF) is co-organized by the Governments of Mexico and Switzerland. Participants heard introductory speeches in a morning plenary session, and presentations on the theme “People, forest governance and forests.” 
In the afternoon, participants took part in two roundtable sessions on governance and REDD+ implementation and on opportunities for establishing synergies between mitigation and adaptation initiatives.

Christian Küchli, Federal Office for the Environment, Switzerland, cautioned against the temptation to use centralistic approaches to implement REDD+ and urged strengthening safeguards.
Jan McAlpine, Director, UNFF, emphasized a 360º approach to forests that implies building cross-sectoral partnerships.
