HIGHLIGHTS: Wednesday, 2 June

On Wednesday morning, delegates met in Plenary to consider policies for renewable energy market development. The first part of the session focused on the electricity sector, followed by presentations and discussions on heating and transport. In the afternoon, Plenary sessions focused on financing options, strengthening capacities, and research and technology development. Several side events were also held throughout the day.

MORNING PLENARY SESSIONS

IV: Policies for Renewable Energy Market Development

A: Electricity

Carlos Magariños, Director General, UNIDO, outlining UNIDO's work to bring access to modern energy to some of the estimated 1.8 to 2 billion people who currently live without it.

Ma Shenghong, China, briefing participants on China's Brightness and Township Electrification Programme, which aims to bring modern energy to thousands of remote rural communities.

Aloys Wobben, CEO, Enercon GmbH, presenting the wind energy projects of the Windfarm Bimolton in Germany.

Jayantha Nagendran, Project Director, DFCC Bank, Sri Lanka, briefed participants on an energy services delivery project in Sri Lanka.

Steve Westwell, CEO and President, BP Solar, explained that if solar energy can sustain the rate of cost reductions achieved during the past 30 years, then it should be competitive with mainstream grid-supplied electricity on a price per kilowatt hour basis within 15-20 years.

B: Heat and Transport

IV: Financing Options for Renewable Energies:
This Plenary session featured presentations on financing options in Bangladesh and the Czech Republic, as well as enterprise development and financial formulas for renewable energy sources.

V: Strenthening Capacities, Research and Technology Development, Institutions:
In this Plenary session, presentations were made on a variety of topics, including geothermal energy training and photovotaics in Germany, among others.

SIDE EVENT:

Day of Geothermal Power

This one-day event covered the state of the art of geothermal power, as well as market development, project set up and implementation and presentations of actions and commitments for the International Action Plan.

Attila Kujbus, Hungary, emphasized the importance of feasibility studies prior to the implementation of geothermal projects.

AROUND THE CONFERENCE CENTRE


There are many exhibits spread out along the two levels of Bonn's International Conference Center, location of renewables 2004.
The exhibit of the German state of Hesse, on the upper level of the conference center has a maquette of solar powered energy towers.
