Monday 16 | The International Expert Meeting on a 10-Year Framework of Programmes for Sustainable Consumption and Production opened on Monday, 16 June, in Marrakesh, Morocco. The meeting was organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA) in co-operation with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and responds to a call in the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation for the development of a ten-year framework of programmes in support of regional and national initiatives to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns. Plenary sessions on Monday morning included opening presentations that outlined the meeting's objectives and identified sustainable consumption and production as crucial to sustaining economic growth, improving living standards and using resources efficiently. The reports of the regional expert meetings on sustainable consumption and production for the Latin America and Caribbean Region held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 23-25 April 2003 and for the Asia-Pacific Region, held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from 21-23 May 2003 were presented. In the afternoon, participants listened to a keynote presentation on public purchase power as a tool for changing production patterns, and reviewed a Discussion Paper prepared for the meeting by the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development on the "International Expert Meeting on the 10-Year Framework of Programmes for Sustainable Consumption and Production: Chapter III of the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation". The plenary closed by reviewing the programme of work to be taken over the next three days.
