ENB Summary

Monday, October 20, 2003
| On Monday, 20 October, delegates to the ESCWA Regional Implementation Meeting in preparation for CSD-12, considered a report on institutional frameworks for sustainable development and a proposal for an environmental work programme for the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment. They also addressed priorities and achievements in the area of sustainable development.

Panel (left to right): Mahmood Abdulraheem, UNEP, Chair Mahmoud Hewehy, Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs of Egypt, Fatma El Din El Mallah, League of Arab States, and Hosny Khordagui, ESCWA.

Arab Hoballah, UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP), presents on the regional strategy for sustainable development in the Mediterranean, and explains that civil society is extremely active in the work of the MAP, which covers various aspects of pollution, biodiversity, and sustainable development.

Emad Adly, Arab Network for Environment and Development, stresses that the report on institutional frameworks for sustainable development does not present a single institutional model, and recommends that countries select the most suitable option, in view of national specificities.

Wafia Eteiba, National Council of Women, emphasizes the role of women in sustainable development, and suggests including gender sensitive data in the report to be submitted to the UN Secretary General.

Lebanon notes the role of the private sector in sustainable development, and recommends further studying incentives for private sector investment in the field of the environment.

Noting that sustainable development cannot be achieved without peace and security, Libya supports a slogan on the topic of security and safety for the 2004 Arab Environment day.
