IISD Reporting Services - Stockholm Convention on POPs

On Monday, delegates to the twelfth meeting of the Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC-12) gathered for the first day of its meeting in the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome, Italy. Pre-meetings for members and observers were held in the morning.

In the afternoon, the meeting was formally opened by Chair Estefânia Gastaldello Moreira, Brazil. Kerstin Stendahl, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) Conventions, welcomed participants and emphasized that the POPRC’s continued consideration of chemicals on the basis of all available scientific and technical information is essential for the Conference of the Parties to take informed decisions at its meeting next year. Following adoption of the agenda and consideration of the rotation of membership, the POPRC initiated its consideration of the draft risk profiles for dicofol and PFOA, its salts, and PFOA-related compounds.

Contact groups on dicofol and PFOA, its salts and PFOA-related compounds convened in the evening.

IISD Reporting Services, through its ENB Meeting Coverage, has provided daily web updates from POPRC-12. In addition, IISD Reporting Services has produced a summary and analysis report from the meeting, which is available in HTML and PDF.
