Summary

On Tuesday, 24 October 2017, the thirteenth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC-13) of the Rotterdam Convention Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade met for a second day in Rome, Italy.

In the early morning, contact groups on acetochlor and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) finalized the development of rationales for the substances.

In plenary throughout the day, the Committee considered notifications of final regulatory actions for carbon tetrachloride, hexazinone, pentachlorobenzene (PeCB), phorate, polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), chlordecone, and endosulfan. For these chemicals, CRC-13 concluded that not all the Annex II criteria had been met and that no further action was warranted at this time. The Committee also discussed the notifications of final regulatory action on mirex, agreeing that the listing criteria had been met, and established a contact group to develop the rationale for the notification.

At lunchtime, delegates attended a side-event organized by the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm (BRS) conventions Secretariat entitled, “BRS Science to Action.”

A contact group to develop the rationale for mirex, and a Friends of the Chair group on phorate met in the evening.

IISD Reporting Services, through its Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) Meeting Coverage, provided daily web highlights and a summary and analysis report from CRC-13. The summary and analysis report is now available in HTML and PDF.
