Summary

The second meeting of the Open-ended Intergovernmental Ad Hoc Expert Group (AHEG2) on Matters Referred to in Paragraph 48 of UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution 2015/33 “International Arrangement on Forests Beyond 2015” resumed on Wednesday, 26 October 2016, at the UN Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, for its third day of deliberations.

In the morning, participants concluded their initial deliberations on the Co-Chairs’ proposal for the Strategic Plan 2017-2030, addressing, inter alia, the communication and outreach strategy and the review framework. Participants also addressed the Co-Chairs’ proposal for the Quadrennial Programme of Work 2017-2030 (4POW).

In the afternoon, participants discussed non-papers on: forests’ contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); an indicative list of categories of forest-related data where baseline information is available or can be estimated; existing intergovernmentally-agreed targets, objectives, goals and commitments on forests; and a proposal for text on the roles and responsibilities of Major Groups and other stakeholders. Participants agreed to revisit the goals and targets on Thursday morning, with updated documents detailing existing and quantitative goals, targets and baseline information relating to forests.
