Adnan Amin, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) moderated a discussion with Macky Sall, President of Senegal, Hailemariam Desalegn, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, and Ernest Bai Koroma, President of Sierra Leone.

IRENA A youth choir welcomed participants on Monday morning to the opening ceremony of the World Future Energy Summit, an event dedicated to renewable energies, energy efficiency and clean technologies. The event includes a conference, an international exhibition, the Project & Finance Village, the Young Future Energy Leaders program, as well as a number of corporate meetings and concurrent social events, including several several side events organized by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

At the opening ceremony, the week was framed as an action-oriented conference and event to ensure sustainable access to water and energy, mitigate impacts of climate change, create jobs and sustained economic growth and develop solutions through partnerships.

Sultan Ahmed al Jaber, CEO, Masdar, called for a collective effort to rethink and transform economies to become more resilient, productive and efficient, making it possible to achieve the tremendous potential for sustainable energy and development. Opening remarks were made also by IRENA Director-General Adnan Amin and a panel of Heads of State from Africa focusing on harnessing Africa’s great renewable energy potential.

The side event on the Global Renewable Energy Atlas was hosted by IRENA. The presenters reported progress regarding global renewable energy data, notably on wind and solar energy, including technical and socioeconomic information in reference to the Atlas.

Irena/ADFD Presentation

Seleha Lockwood, Manager of the IRENA/Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, presented on the results of the first round of project funding by the IRENA/ADFD Project Facility, which is providing loans for six renewable energy projects in six different developing countries. She then discussed the evaluation process, selection criteria and methodologies for the upcoming second round of project funding, encouraging interested parties to submit applications by the February 18 deadline.

The side event on Financing the Africa Clean Energy Corridor was hosted by IRENA. The interactive panel discussion addressed the real and perceived risks for financing renewable energy in Africa.

SIDS Event Room Shot

The High-Level Discussion on preparations for the 3rd International Conference on SIDS in Apia, Samoa in September 2014 was hosted by IRENA. Ministers and delegates engaged in dialogue on the challenges and opportunities regarding renewable energy implementation in SIDS and how IRENA could support member countries.

The side event on Risk Coverage for Renewable Energy Investments was co-hosted by IRENA and Climate Policy Initiative. The first panel focused on the state of play in risk mitigation instruments for renewable energy investments. The second panel considered the way forward.
