The Workshop on Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) Management commenced on Monday, 20 April 2015, in Bangkok, Thailand. Tina Birmpili, Executive Secretary, Ozone Secretariat, opened the session, followed by brief presentations by A.R. Ravishankara, Co-Chair of the Scientific Assessment Panel (SAP), on current atmospheric HFC abundances in the atmosphere and projected concentrations, and Bella Maranion, Co-Chair of the Technology and Economic Assessment Panel (TEAP), on current and extrapolated future HFC demand by sectors and potential impacts of mitigation measures.
Following the opening session, the first day of the workshop was divided into three sessions. Each opened with short presentations by invited speakers on aspects of the session's focus, followed by reactions and discussion by a panel of technology providers/implementers, with questions posed by members of the audience, including inputs from an online board for posting questions. Session 1, “Challenges and opportunities in addressing high global warming potential (GWP) HFCs in the refrigeration sector” convened in the morning. In the afternoon Session 2 addressed “Challenges and opportunities in addressing high-GWP HFCs in the stationary air-conditioning and heat pump sector.” Session 3, “Challenges and opportunities in addressing high-GWP HFCs in mobile air-conditioning” was held in the evening.
