Highlights for Thursday, 3 April 2014
.
US Ambassador Elizabeth Cousens states that the US, Canada and Israel support a stand-alone goal to protect the oceans.
OWG-10On the fourth day of the tenth meeting of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), delegates discussed possible goals and targets related to sustainable cities and human settlements, promote sustainable consumption and production (SCP), and climate during the morning. OWG Co-Chair Kamau opened the day describing the clusters as “post-MDG” issues, and he suggested that OWG participants be tolerant of each other as they seek to define goals and targets in such uncharted waters. Speakers emphasized the importance of each issue and their interlinkages, highlighted the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on SCP, and emphasized resilience and risk management in relation to climate change. Many speakers said they would not support a stand-alone goal on climate change, but thought it should be addressed in cross-cutting targets. Proposals were made to create goals on both urban and SCP issues.

During the afternoon, delegates discussed possible goals and targets related to conservation and sustainable use of marine resources, oceans and seas; and ecosystems and biodiversity. At the end of the day, Co-Chair Kőrösi said he sensed broad consensus around stand-alone goals for each of the discussion’s two topics.
