On Tuesday, 4 February 2014, OWG participants continued their discussion of oceans and seas, forests, and biodiversity. During a morning panel session, Mark Smith, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), said “biodiversity is a development issue,” since human well-being cannot be improved without the benefits brought by nature. He proposed a goal to “enhance the benefits for all from biodiversity and ecosystems services in a just world that values and conserves nature.” Marie Haga, Global Crop Diversity Trust, said that, because global agriculture is facing “its greatest challenges ever” due to climate change and population growth, crop biodiversity is even more critical for ensuring food security. She emphasized that crop diversity is a global common good that must be reflected in the targets of the SDGs. Daju Resosudarmo, CIFOR, said forests are fundamental to sustainable development and are relevant to every issue that had been discussed thus far in the OWG.Delegates then continued to offer statements on the agenda items during the morning and afternoon sessions.

During a brief, informal evening session, Co-Chair Kamau said that the Co-Chairs’ informal consultations with Member States on the way forward had allowed them to come to a quick agreement. He said the Co-Chairs will formulate a stock-taking document, which will take into account everything that has been discussed over the past year, to be released on 14 February 2014. They will also present a document around which a conversation of SDGs and targets can begin, detailing “priority areas” that Member States may wish to discuss, by 21 February. He promised that the Co-Chairs will keep their word from informal conversations and “deliver what we promised to deliver.”
