The AIMS (Atlantic, Indian, Mediterranean and South China Sea) Regional Preparatory Meeting for the Third International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS) continued on Thursday, 18 July, in Baie Lazare, Seychelles. A drafting group convened in the morning, chaired by Jean-Paul Adam, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Seychelles. This session included representatives from the five AIMS SIDS present in the meeting, along with a youth delegate and representatives from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Earth Negotiations Bulletin. Delegates discussed progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the Barbados Programme of Action (BPOA) and the Mauritius Strategy for Implementation (MSI) in the morning and regional priorities for sustainable development of SIDS in the afternoon.
In a parallel high-level session, the morning dialogue session focused on “Emerging Opportunities in the Region,” with presentations by Seychelles, Mauritius, Cape Verde, the United Arab Emirates, FAO and UNEP. This was followed by a second session including presentations on oceans governance and the blue economy. After lunch, there were a number of presentations and discussion on building partnerships, including on the Western Indian Ocean Coastal Challenge, debt-for-adaptation swaps, SIDS DOCK Sustainable Energy Initiative, the Global Islands Partnership (GLISPA), threats to livelihoods, the University Consortium for SIDS, and the Indian Ocean Commission’s Islands Project, among others.
