Highlights and images for 13 December 2022

As the conference entered its second and final week, negotiation streams multiplied and intensified. The flow of participants increased noticeably in negotiating rooms but also in spaces hosting side-events and the Rio Conventions Pavilion.

Deliberations continued on the global biodiversity framework (GBF), with the contact group and several informal groups addressing various parts of the draft, and delegates celebrating agreement on target 14 on mainstreaming.

Discussions also progressed on the interlinked items of resource mobilization and digital sequence information (DSI). Lengthy debates on resource mobilization highlighted once more the funding gap for biodiversity action and the need for financial resources to advance implementation of related commitments. The Friends of the Chair group on DSI considered a revised non-paper on benefit-sharing from DSI use, including options on establishment of a global benefit-sharing mechanism and/or a process for its establishment or operationalization.

Working Group II continued its work on conference room papers (CRPs). Following successful contact group deliberations, delegates approved draft decisions on marine and coastal biodiversity, including the traditionally controversial item of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs), and the work programme of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), among other items. References to nature-based solutions alongside ecosystem-based approaches remain outstanding across approved decisions, including on biodiversity and agriculture, and conservation and sustainable use of marine and coastal biodiversity. Under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, all draft decisions have progressed to the level of L documents.

Evening contact groups continued work on resource mobilization, synthetic biology, and monitoring, reporting, and review.
