Summary for Monday, 23 June 2014
On Monday, delegates convened for the opening plenary of the first session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) of UNEP. In the afternoon the Committee of the Whole (COW) convened. Delegates considered draft decisions submitted by governments and the Committee of Permanent Representatives.

Summary for Tuesday, 24 June 2014
On Tuesday delegates convened for the Global Symposium on the Environmental Rule of Law. The COW met throughout the day continuing consideration of draft decisions. In the afternoon the Gender and Environment Forum convened in four parallel sessions. In the evening delegates participated at UNEA "Unplugged," a town hall debate moderated by renowned Kenyan journalist, Jeff Koinange, that aimed to capture the diversity of voices on the thematic issues being addressed at UNEA. A contact group on chemicals and waste met, as well as the drafting group and the Working Party on rules of procedure.

The High-Level Segment (HLS) of UNEA opened on Thursday morning. At lunchtime a briefing was held on the two themes of the HLS. In the afternoon the ministerial plenary on the SDGs and post-2015 development agenda, including SCP, convened. Contact groups convened throughout the day.

Summary for Friday, 27 June 2014

On Friday, the ministerial plenary on the SDGs and post-2015 development agenda, including SCP, continued. The COW completed its work and approved outstanding decisions. The closing UNEA plenary convened in the afternoon. Delegates adopted two decisions and 14 resolutions on, inter alia: strengthening the role of the UNEP in promoting air quality; the Science-Policy Interface; Ecosystem-based Adaptation; Implementation of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development; Illegal Trade in Wildlife; Chemicals and Waste; and Marine Debris and Microplastics.

Addressing delegates, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said "the message is clear: protecting humanity's life support system is integral to sustainable development and a duty for all."

Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya, observed that work on the SDGs will add clarity, precision and broad expertise to the new global framework for sustainable development.

During the evening, the Ministerial Outcome Document of UNEA of UNEP was adopted. However, several member states requested that the meeting report reflect their reservations concerning the document.

UNEA President Oyun Sanjaasuren gaveled the meeting to a close at 11:00pm.
