First UNEA to UNEPThe First UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) will convene in Nairobi, Kenya, from 23-27 June 2014. The UNEA of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) represents the highest level of governance of international environmental affairs in the UN system.

Rio+20 agreed in June 2012 to strengthen and upgrade UNEP through measures including universal membership of its Governing Council and ensuring the active participation of all relevant stakeholders. In March 2013, the 67th session of the UN General Assembly changed the designation of the Governing Council of UNEP to become UNEA, reflecting the intention to elevate its status. The Committee of Permanent Representatives to UNEP met in Nairobi from 24-28 March 2014 to prepare the agenda for the first session of the UNEA and provide advice on policy matters.

Over 1,200 participants and 170 national delegations will take part in the first UNEA, including 80 ministers and many senior officials and heads of international organizations.

More than 40 events will take place, including discussions on: air quality in African cities; sustainable consumption and production; sound management of chemicals and waste; illegal trade in wildlife; and green and decent jobs.

IISD RS will provide daily web coverage of selected side events at UNEA-1 from 23 to 27 June 2014.
