Highlights for Saturday, 21 June 2014
First UNEA to UNEP The 15th Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF-15) opened on Saturday 21 June 2014, at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The Forum takes place ahead of the first session of the United Nations Environment Assembly of the UNEP (UNEA).

During the opening plenary session on Saturday morning, participants heard welcome statements from Marcos Orellana, co-Chair of the Major Groups Facilitating Committee, and Ibrahim Thiaw, Deputy Director, UNEP. This was followed by a session titled “UNEA: Significance, Structure and Expected Outcomes,” during which Jiří Hlaváček, Secretary of the Governing Bodies, UNEP, and Alexander Juras, Chief, UNEP Major Groups and Stakeholders Branch, briefed GMGSF participants on the UNEA process so far and the status of UNEP’s Stakeholder Engagement Policy that is due to be negotiated for possible adoption at UNEA.

In the afternoon, participants met in nine thematic clusters to discuss GMGSF-15 input to the four thematic discussions taking place during UNEA’s high-level segment, as well as a number of draft decisions. The session concluded with a two-hour open dialogue session with Achim Steiner, Executive Director, UNEP.
