Eighth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC 8) of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure (PIC) for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade

19-23 March 2012 | Geneva, Switzerland
Highlights for Monday, 19 March 2012
The eighth meeting of the Chemical Review Committee (CRC-8) to the Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent opened on Monday, 19 March in Geneva, Switzerland.
Jim Willis, the Joint Executive Secretary of the Basel and Stockholm Conventions and the UNEP part of the Rotterdam Convention, opened the meeting, welcoming participants to CRC-8.  Willis noted that, like the Basel Convention Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG), and the Stockholm Convention Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC), CRC provides the substance for the work of the Rotterdam Convention.
After adopting the agenda and agreeing on the organization of work, CRC considered those outcomes of COP-5 relevant to the Committee’s work, including agreement to list endosulfan in Annex III; agreement to promote cooperation among the Basel, Stockholm and Rotterdam conventions and, in particular, POPRC and CRC; and COP5’s request that the Secretariat prepare guidelines for notifications of final regulatory action, with an explanation of the term severely restricted chemical.
The Committee began its technical work by reviewing the draft DGDs and comments received intersessionally from members and observers on pentaBDE, octaBDE, PFOS and Gramoxone Super. In the afternoon, drafting groups convened to revise the DGDs on pentaBDE, octaBDE and PFOS, based on comments received during the morning plenary.
